While marrying rich does come with its perks, it’s not always rainbows and butterflies. Hong Kong actress Betsy Cheung (张凤妮) has been married to a Malaysian Datuk for more than two decades – and she has a lot of things to share about her experience.
In a recent interview with a media outlet, the 58-year-old spoke candidly about her 26-year-long marriage to Malaysian and Iris Corp President Datuk Paul Poh (傅仰峰). Betsy and Paul married in 1998 and have three daughters together. The former Miss Hong Kong contestant also reportedly retired from the entertainment industry to take care of her family but recently made a comeback through the TVB drama “The Heir to The Throne (家族荣耀之继承者)”.
According to Betsy, she experienced a lot of culture shock during the early days of her marriage, sharing one instance when she and her husband had to sit at different tables at dinner with his family. The actress also revealed there are times when her husband would wake her up in the middle of the night so she could cook a meal for him. While it may seem like Paul is asking too much of his wife, Betsy said that she knows that he loves her and understands that it’s part of the local culture. She also said that her husband has been very respectful towards her in their almost 30 years of marriage.
When asked whether other women had tried to approach her husband, the Hong Kong star said she hadn’t had to experience such a thing. However, Betsy did share some advice that she got from her godmother on how to maintain her relationship. According to Betsy’s godmother, “Sometimes you have to pretend to be deaf, blind and dumb. If he (your husband) is good to you, treats you well and is not irresponsible, then it’s all good. There are things that you shouldn’t know, so let it be.” Regardless of the advice, the 57-year-old believes that as long as she is a good mother, wife and daughter-in-law, her husband will be grateful.
Whatever it is, it seems that Betsy and Paul have a great marriage and family in their hands. We wish them all the love and happiness for years to come.
