(Video) Giant Batu Caves Shuts Down After 22 Years Of Operation

It’s a bittersweet start to the new year for Gombak residents because, after more than two decades in operation, the Giant Supermarket in Batu Caves has officially shut its doors. The iconic landmark recently ceased operations on 12th January 2025 (Saturday).

The supermarket opened its doors in 2003 and has served Gombak residents for 22 years. According to reports, Giant closed down due to the expiration of Giant’s rental period at the 180,000-foot lot at Lot 10243, Mukim Batu. The existing lot will soon be replaced by TF Value-Mart, which has previously signed an agreement with real estate developer owner Crystal Promenade Sdn Bhd to take over the premises once the lease expires.

Many locals have reacted to Giant’s closure, expressing gratitude for the supermarket’s many years of service. Some said they’ve been frequenting the outlet for years, adding that it was a great place to get cheap groceries. Others lament that many long-time stores have shut down recently, likely due to lack of traffic. It’s also worth noting that Giant previously shut down its Kelana Jaya outlet in 2023 after 19 years of operations.

Thankfully, Giant shoppers in Gombak won’t need to travel far to get groceries because the supermarket’s operation will relocate to a new outlet, relatively close to the previous lot. As announced by the management, a new Giant Super Cheap outlet will open at Jalan SG3/9 in Taman Sri Gombak, just five minutes away from Giant Batu Caves. However, there was no mention of an opening date.

While it’s sad to hear Giant Batu Caves shutting down after so many years, at least customers in the Gombak area will still be able to shop at Giant once the new outlet opens. What are your thoughts on this?

Here’s a look at Giant Batu Caves on its last day of operation:
