We’ve heard countless success stories of those who started from the bottom and made their way to become an influential figure in the world but what happened to those who have lost their fame and fortune?
Kenneth Low, who was once known as one of Malaysia’s star squash players, has been making a living as a cleaner at an archery centre for quite some time and during a recent interview with local media, he explained how he got to this point in his life.
Speaking with FreeMalaysiaToday, former squash player Kenneth Low Ewe Loong shared his life update after having to retire from being a full-time athlete due to poor health. It was revealed that the 47-year-old is suffering from multiple illnesses including a stroke-induced impairment, reduced coordination and motor skills, cognitive disability, and short-term memory dysfunction.
After falling on hard times, the former athlete now works as a cleaner at the Best Archery Centre in Glo Damansara. Prior to that, he worked as a cleaner together with foreigners at condominiums. It was said that the public figure, who was once ranked No. 4 in Asia and No. 38 in the world, cannot afford to get tested to determine the severity of his disorders.
Despite his hardship, he said he’s still grateful that he was given the chance to work again. “I can’t complain as there are many people who don’t have jobs. At least I have a job and I am not a burden to anyone,” he said. The former champion also revealed that he’s happy to be able to do the work despite the low monthly salary of RM1.5k.
Jeffrey Kok, the archery centre’s owner told FMT that he originally hired Kenneth as a coach even though he had no prior experience in archery. “He needed urgent help but I didn’t employ him out of pity. We look to train people with no archery experience as coaches because it is something we can teach from zero,” he elaborated. The coach revealed that he believes that Kenneth will one day get back on his feet.
After the story broke out, the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) came to the former athlete’s aid with a RM20k contribution for his medical treatment. “We will continue to help Kenneth and we have informed Yakeb (National Athletes’ Welfare Foundation),” said director Major (rtd) S. Maniam.
