Violence is never the optimal way to solve conflicts. Unfortunately, this primal tendency of ours does occasionally show up from time to time. Be it the frustration from someone cutting the queue, or some kind of political disagreement, the red mist is never far behind.

A festive celebration turned chaotic when a brawl erupted during the Songkran Festival at 1 Utama Shopping Centre over the weekend. The incident occurred at the open-air car park, where the festival event was being held from 10th to 20th April, featuring water games, Thai delicacies, and live music performances.

The parking lot was a mess with chairs and fists being thrown in the air, between the bigger eating area tents and brightly lit food stalls, the brawlers fought it out in the rain. Meanwhile, onlookers watch the degeneracy in awe while shooting off a squirt or two with their water pistols.

Commenters were quick to point out the absurdity of a foreign event being reduced to such a state: “Such a good Songkran event spoiled by a few hooligans…” The brawl has turned into the fly in the ointment for a 10-day event. Others voice their worry that authorities are banning such events and ruining the fun for everyone else: “Oh great, brainless, next time authorities won’t approve such events.” Petaling Jaya Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Ja’far, stated that although no official reports have been lodged, investigations will nonetheless proceed.

Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year celebrated annually from 13th to 15th April. While globally recognised for its exuberant water festivities, the festival’s core traditions involve visiting temples, offering food to monks, and performing ritual water pourings over Buddha statues and elders’ hands, reflecting reverence and the cleansing of sins.
