Sadly, not many K-pop idols have directly shown or voiced their support for the people of Palestine, due to various reasons, especially since this is considered a sensitive topic. That said, a handful have at least taken the initiative, albeit considered the bare minimum, to use their platforms more effectively and raise awareness of the ongoing genocide.
One of the latest Korean stars to do so is FIFTY FIFTY member Chanelle (문샤넬), who, during a livestream, mouthed a particular phrase that earned her praise from fans. Here’s what she said:

Chanelle is one of the new members who joined FIFTY FIFTY after the departure of the 3 original members. Although she and the new line-up have received mixed reactions, her recent action has earned her mostly positive feedback. The singer recently hosted a livestream and at one point during the broadcast, she appeared to mouth the words “Free Palestine”.
As seen in the video below, the idol moved her lips slowly, as if to make sure viewers understood what she was trying to say. She then nodded, seemingly confirming that those were indeed the words she had mouthed. The moment during the livestream instantly went viral, with fans praising her for directly showing her support and being clear on her political stance.

Many acknowledged that it was still considered the bare minimum, but commended her efforts to bypass censorship. Some, however, were less convinced, arguing that simply mouthing words means little and is considered performative if an idol does not follow it up with concrete action. Given the sensitivity of the issue and the risks posed by censorship, it is understandable why fans were excited to see their idol on what they consider the right side of history. At the same time, those who feel that more should be done also hold a valid perspective.
Perhaps this marks the first step for Chanelle before going on to use her platform and status as a public figure to contribute more actively to the cause of Palestinian liberation. Regardless, more celebrities should be clear about their political stance and follow it up with meaningful action. What do you think?
