If you are familiar with Japanese television, you have probably seen a variety of comedy programmes, from pranks to skits and game shows. Whether or not you find them over the top, they remain undeniably entertaining — even more so when a celebrity guest makes an appearance.
TWICE (트와이스) were recently in Japan to promote their latest comeback, but received the surprise of their lives when they found themselves caught up in a prank on a reality programme, where they were also asked to perform for fans. Here is what happened:
Earlier this week, five members of TWICE, Momo, Jihyo, Sana, Nayeon and Chaeyoung, were scheduled to appear on the “Ningen Kansatsu Variety Monitoring” show. As seen in the preview video of the upcoming episode, the girls were placed in what appeared to be a holding room, where they were seen resting and sampling the snacks on the table.
Suddenly, one of the walls began to rise, startling Momo and Jihyo, who screamed and jumped out of their seats when they noticed the movement. As it turned out, the holding room was actually a stage, with fans cheering in delight from the audience seats as soon as the K-pop idols came into view. Sana and Chaeyoung were seen covering their mouths in disbelief. Following the prank, the members went on to give an impromptu performance of their new single “Enemy”.
The preview has since gone viral on social media, with fans amused by the singers’ reactions to the prank. Many were entertained by Momo and Jihyo’s startled response when the wall began to rise, while others remarked on how calm Sana appeared, suggesting she quickly realised they were being pranked, perhaps because, as a Japanese member, she is more familiar with these kinds of television tricks.
If you are wondering about the other members, TWICE did appear as a full group on the “Shabekuri 007” show. For now, the episode is only available in Japanese on the official NTV channel or on Hulu. That said, fans have shared some highlights from the episode on social media.
