Just two weeks before the 30th anniversary of Tupac Shakur’s death, a former gang member was convicted of murdering the late hip-hop icon. A jury has found Duane Keith Davis, a.k.a Keffe D, guilty of orchestrating the 1996 killing of Tupac, marking the first conviction in the decades-long case.

Tupac’s death had been the subject of scrutiny and conspiracy for many years. On 7th September 1996, the rap star was shot four times in a car near the Las Vegas Strip. The incident stemmed from a fight that happened earlier that day. A few days later, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on 13th September 1996. Tupac was 25 years old at the time of his death.

Gang member Orlando Anderson was suspected in the murder of Tupac, but was never charged in the case. He died in 1998 in an unrelated gang shootout. Duane, Orlando’s uncle, was also a suspect in the case. Notably, the 63-year-old had publicly spoken of his involvement in the shooting, even describing the killing in his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend”.

In September 2023, Duane was arrested after being indicted by a grand jury for the first-degree murder of Tupac. His trial began earlier this month, on 10th August 2026 (Monday). He was convicted on 31st August 2026 (Monday) on the charge of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang in Tupac’s killing. The case’s jury took roughly three hours to reach the verdict.

Duane has pleaded not guilty to the charge. Clark County District Court Judge Carli Kierny has scheduled his sentencing hearing for 13th October 2026 (Tuesday). While first-degree murder in Nevada carries penalties of up to life imprisonment, prosecutors had not sought the death penalty against Duane. The former gang member and his legal team also state that they plan to appeal the verdict.

Fans and netizens have shared their reactions to the case and the recent verdict. While some expressed relief that there is finally a conviction after nearly 30 years, others questioned why the case took so long to reach a conclusion. There are also comments debating whether anyone else was responsible for Tupac’s death, since many speculated that disgraced music mogul Diddy was also involved in the case.

For now, the public has to wait for the sentencing hearing to see how the case concludes. However, it seems Tupac’s murder will continue to be discussed even if Duane goes to jail.
