Guess there’s a new meaning to taking your music to new heights. In a recent radio interview, English singer Ed Sheeran revealed that he could’ve been the first singer to perform in outer space.
The 34-year-old was recently on BBC Radio 2’s “The Scott Mills Breakfast Show” to talk about his new album, “Play”. During the episode, the singer and host Scott Mills talked about Mariah Carey’s reluctance about space travel after learning that Katy Perry was part of the Blue Origin space flight back in April. While on the topic, Ed revealed that he was once offered the opportunity to go to space.

He said the idea of space travel at the moment terrifies him, adding, “I want to go to space when it’s like flying to France and 40,000 people have done it, and you can just book it online. I don’t want to be a guinea pig for that, because it still is dangerous.” Scott was understandably in disbelief of the revelation before quipping, “I’m fascinated that someone just probably emails you and goes, ‘Hi, do you want to go to space?’”
Ed explained that the invite was to perform a gig in space, which would be the first of its kind. While some more adventurous singers may consider the offer for a historic first performance in space, Ed said he’s not keen at all because he has kids. The “Perfect” singer said, “I’m not gonna risk that. For what? Like a Guinness World Record or something? I’m not gonna risk my kids not having a dad.”

While Ed Sheeran and Mariah Carey may not be interested in going into space, Katy Perry was. The Blue Origin space flight she was aboard launched the pop star into orbit and back in just over 10 minutes. Also on the flight was television personality Gayle King and journalist Lauren Sánchez, the wife of Blue Origin and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. However, those on the flight, including Katy, received massive backlash from the public.
Interestingly, DJ Steve Aoki and rapper T.O.P, a.k.a Choi Seunghyun, would’ve gone to space too if the project they signed on to hadn’t cancelled their plans. Do you think there will be another musician brave enough to take the risk? Here’s a clip of Ed on the radio show:
