There have been many cases of reckless drivers who seem to not care about those around them – from lorry drivers to local celebs. Recently, another reckless driver was caught nearly hitting a police officer in Singapore after cutting the queue to bypass the traffic.

According to the Facebook page that uploaded a video of the incident, the near-accident happened at the Singapore Woodlands Checkpoint en route to the Johor Checkpoint at the Sultan Iskandar Building. The footage was from the dashcam of a vehicle queuing to the left of the bus lane.

In the footage, the black MPV with a Malaysian registration plate used the right-hand bus lane to cut ahead of the queue. As this was an illegal move, the MPV was promptly stopped by two auxiliary police officers before a bus approached it from behind.

The auxiliary police officers then moved a nearby traffic cone, likely intending to clear the way for the driver to make a U-turn and move to the back of the queue. However, the MPV driver chose to disregard the officers and instead boldly drove between the officers to speed away.

In the video, the driver narrowly missed the two officers but still placed them in danger, just to skip a queue. The driver’s reckless behaviour sparked a flurry of comments from netizens. Many unsurprisingly criticised the driver for queue cutting and reckless endangerment. Some netizens noted that the vehicle is most likely registered in Singapore’s Land Transport Authority database, which could complicate the driver’s subsequent entry into the country.

A few months back, a Malaysian was jailed for a similar incident at the same location. Not sure if the MPV driver will face the same fate – but let’s use these incidents to remind ourselves to follow traffic laws.

Update (Wednesday, 14th June)

According to a new report from the Straits Times, the driver of the black MPV has been identified by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA). A spokesman for the ICA said the driver is a Malaysian travelling from Singapore to Malaysia during the incident, adding that both the driver and the vehicle have been banned from entering Singapore. The spokesman also states that enforcement actions will be taken against motorists cutting queues, saying, “ICA would like to reiterate that we do not condone the behaviour of errant motorists who deliberately disobey traffic rules. Such acts pose a safety hazard to officers as well as other checkpoint users and put them at risk.”
