Discovering one’s sexual and gender identity can take years and even then, only a handful of people would have the courage to come out to the world. Singaporean comedian Kumarason Chinnadurai, mononymously known as Kumara, has always been very open about being gay but since he often cross-dresses for his performances, to this day, many are confused about his gender identity.
In a very recent interview on a podcast, the public figure revealed that he actually considered gender-reassignment surgery at one point in his life but changed his mind. What exactly happened? Here’s what he said:

On the latest episode of “The Daily Ketchup Podcast”, which was uploaded earlier this week on YouTube, Kumar appeared as a guest where he shared about the early stages of his career as well as his personal life. Since he is mostly known as a drag queen comedian, one of the hosts was curious to know if he ever questioned his gender identity and considered transitioning.
“Yes, when I was very young but I changed my mind because I wouldn’t be who I am today. I would’ve ended up on the streets as a prostitute because back in those days, nobody would employ you if you were transgender. You can’t work anywhere so many of them ended up on the streets which was unfortunate. Those poor people,” he said. After making his point, the entertainer applauded the brands in Singapore that later became pioneers in hiring trans folks to work at their companies.

Apart from growing up as a queer individual, Kumar also shared about his life as a parent after taking in his adopted son Sathin, who was introduced to the world through the OGS documentary on YouTube last year. The drag performer said that parenthood had taught him how to be more patient, especially when it came to raising a troubled teenager.
