A talent in front and behind the camera, Chow Yun Fat (周润发), a.k.a Fat Gor (发哥), has showcased his photography skills many times in exhibitions. However, it’s still a rare opportunity to spot the superstar in his element in public.
A well-known Hong Kong street photographer, who goes by Stacey or streetsnap.portrait on Instagram, recently shared about their encounter with the actor. In the post, the photographer said they happened to spot Chow Yun Fat while at Queen’s Road Central. The actor was engaging in a casual photography session, only equipped with a Hasselblad 907x 50c camera and wearing simple black sports attire.
As shown in the video, Stacey approached the star, asking if they could follow him from afar and learn some photography tips. Chow Yun Fat quietly laughed at the request but quickly agreed. In the next scene, the actor shared some photography advice, saying, “In places with strong sunlight, you need to lower the exposure so the overall exposure looks normal. If the highlights are overexposed, the highlight areas in the photo will be hard to fix in post-processing.”
Stacey said that listening to Chow Yun Fat explaining about photography felt like a scene from the movie, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”. The actor then invites the street photographer to take a selfie together, likely to commemorate their encounter. In the captions, Stacey also thanked the star for the experience, saying they hoped to continue pursuing photography.
The video has since gone viral, amassing over a million views. Many netizens have also commented on the encounter, envying the street photographer. Some also praised Chow Yun Fat for his kindness and down-to-earth personality. However, others also took note of the actor’s choice of camera, quipping that Hasselblad cameras are as pricey as they are renowned. The camera that Chow Yun Fat used in the video retails for around RM29,000.
