A number of Japanese artists visited Malaysia recently, most of them for the highly-anticipated Comic Fiesta event, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Among the invited guests were voice actors Taito Ban and Rie Takahashi, and singers Suzuki Konomi and KIHOW of MYTH & ROID, who took the stage on the final day of the two-day event (stay tuned for our review soon).
While this group was not actually part of Comic Fiesta, they held a concert the same weekend at Zepp KL. Japanese dance group Avantgardey (アバンギャルデ) put on a spectacular performance for fans, and they even took some time exploring KL as well. It seems that one of the members checked out the local music scene and decided to do a dance cover of a very popular song. Watch:
Earlier this week, Nagano of Avantgardey posted a video on her Instagram account, which surprised Malaysian fans. The dancer performed a cover of one of DOLLA’s hit singles, “DAMELO”, which was released back in August 2023. As seen in the screenshots above, the solo performance took place on the streets of Japan, most likely after the dance crew returned from their Malaysian concert.
The dance was just as powerful as the original version, but the Japanese artists added their Avantgardey twist with exaggerated facial expressions. At the time of writing, there is no information on whether members of DOLLA themselves have reacted to the dance cover, but their fans were delighted to see an international artist performing a rendition of the popular uptempo track.
It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t get an Avantgardey and DOLLA collaboration video while the dance crew was still here in Malaysia, but thankfully, they managed to do a collab with local group 3P. Members Nona, Miyu and Kohana joined the Malaysian trio in a dance challenge of their latest single “YES蛇” at Fahrenheit88 Shopping Mall as part of their promotion for their concert at Zepp KL.
Avantgardey also tried out the newly-opened Menya Shishido Restaurant at LaLaport BBCC. It’s clear now that the popular group had a pretty busy but enjoyable time here in Malaysia. We hope we get to see them again in 2025.
