One thing that remains a hot debate between Malaysians and Singaporeans is our food – specifically, which food belongs to whom. For some, the topic could even be sensitive, which is probably why Hero Tai’s (戴祖雄) bold statement on a Taiwanese television show struck a chord with many locals and Singaporeans.
The Malaysian-born celebrity was recently on an episode of “Student (同學來了)”, where Malaysians and Singaporeans guests shared about their lives in their respective countries. However, when it came to Hero’s turn, he brought up the topic of food and claimed that most of the dishes commonly associated with Singapore, like chicken rice and bak kut teh, originated from Malaysia. He even said, “All the Singapore food that you know of are stolen from Malaysia.”
The Singaporean guests on the show opposed the statement, arguing that the dishes were a form of “cultural exchange” and that Singapore was helping to “promote” the dishes. However, another guest also said Malaysia had failed to promote its dishes. Later in the show, the Taiwanese guests were treated to some bak kut teh, both the Malaysian and Singaporean versions. While they noted the differences in taste and appearance, both versions got positive reviews.
The diss didn’t stop there because Hero also poked fun at Singapore’s tourist attractions, like Gardens By The Bay and Wave House Sentosa, saying they’re all “man-made”. He even advised those planning to visit the country to spend no more than three days because there isn’t much to see and they would easily get bored.
Understandably, the 37-year-old’s comments did not sit well with Singaporeans, who took to the comments to criticise the celeb. Many even said that his remarks show his immaturity and his inferiority complex. Some also pointed out other differences between the two countries, namely the economic status and the currency exchange rates.
