It’s well known that every mother, especially in Malaysian households, treasures her food containers, which are often seen as symbols of love and care when packing homemade meals for their loved ones. These containers have become a staple in every household.
Tupperware, the iconic brand that has become a broad term and synonymous with food storage, is a favourite among many. However, there’s unfortunate news for mums everywhere, as the brand may be facing its final chapter, leaving many wondering what’s next.

A few days ago, Tupperware Brands Corporation CEO, Laurie Ann Goldman, announced that the company had officially filed for bankruptcy and was actively seeking a new buyer after years of declining sales. “As a result, we explored numerous strategic options and determined this is the best path forward,” Laurie explained in her statement.
The brand will continue to operate under new management through court approval as part of a sale process aimed at transforming it into a digital-first, technology-driven company. Tupperware has stated that it will seek approval to maintain regular business operations and ensure employees are paid throughout the bankruptcy proceedings.
According to filings in the US Bankruptcy Court, Tupperware listed estimated assets between $500 million and $1 billion (RM2.14 billion to RM4.27 billion), with 50,000 to 100,000 creditors. In 2023, the company reached an agreement with its lenders to restructure its debt obligations and brought on investment bank Moelis & Co. to explore strategic options. Despite these efforts, the company continued to face financial challenges, leading to the current ruination proceedings.

Many people on the internet reacted with disbelief, assuming Tupperware was still thriving due to its enduring popularity. Some were surprised to learn that “Tupperware” actually originated from the brand itself, while others joked that mothers worldwide would be heartbroken if the iconic company shuts down. Some also humorously shared their theories on what led to the bankruptcy, adding to the conversation.
