Tower M: Netizens React To Rumours Of Another “Tallest Building” In KL

It’s well-known that Kuala Lumpur houses more than a few tall skyscrapers – so is there a need for another? A Twitter thread by Skyscrapers MY recently went viral, claiming that Malaysia is about to build another “tallest building” in the region – and netizens are not keen on it.

The tweet shared an image taken at a meeting held by KLCC Holdings, showing a presentation about skyscrapers in the Kuala Lumpur area. The tweet alleged that the new tower will reach a height of 700m, which is taller than the height of the current tallest building in the city, Merdeka 118, standing at 679m. According to the Twitter account, the tower depicted in the presentation resembles the rumoured 145-floor Tower M, which might be constructed near the KLCC Towers.

The thread also included renderings of Tower M and a news report about the tower published in 2019 by CIDB. Skyscrapers MY also revealed that the office space in the Petronas Twin Towers and the Petronas Tower 3 have reached 100% capacity, so the need for additional space could be the reason behind the new building.

While the new skyscraper’s construction is only a rumour, netizens are already against another tower taking space in the city. Many condemned the idea, saying the government and developers should focus on other issues like unmaintained infrastructure. Netizens said other parts of the city should receive development before another skyscraper, like the uneven roads and the lacklustre public transportation system.

Many also debated local developers’ “obsession” with tall buildings, arguing that it doesn’t reflect Malaysia’s economic status because many workers are still underpaid while the cost of living is rising. Others also suggested the tower be developed in other parts of the country to help develop the economy there. Some even argued that building another high-rise in Kuala Lumpur may harm the climate.
