Food, as described by Masses, is the symbolic love when words are insufficient. Thanks to our multicultural country, food is the one commonality that never fails unite us under one roof regardless of race or beliefs.

“The Rojak Projek” was born with one intention in mind – unity in a form of life portraits using Malaysian food as an inspiration. Their illustrations include scrumptious meals such as Roti Canai, Neslo, Nasi Lemak, Muruku, Rojak, Char Kuay Teow, Sirap Bandung, and Onde-Onde.

“The Rojak Projek” community feels that “Malaysians are made up of regular people that have every possible shade of skin colour. We all belong to uncountable cultures and traditions… that’s just how different and diverse we are as a nation.”

“People would think that the way to achieve unity among these differences is to be a colour-blind nation, however, we, The Rojak team, think otherwise,” they added.

On their Facebook page, they explained that “what makes Malaysians Malaysian however, is our ability to bring all of our differences united around one simple gesture, eating together around the dinner table. After all, loving food and being Malaysian is almost synonym. This is simply what being Malaysian is all about.”

They continued, “Our food has always been the gesture of peace which allows us to sit, eat and enjoy each other’s company despite our differences. It is our differences that makes us unique.”

It is truly encouraging to see these young talents using their gifts to share their stories and spread positive light on what it means to be a united nation. Check out the complete food portrait series at The Rojak Projek.
