Effective today (Monday, 3rd April 2023), The Star has announced a revision towards its pricing structure. Its weekday and weekend editions will now be sold at RM3.00 each, along with its annual subscription plans increasing accordingly for existing subscribers.
A significant impact on print sales is expected because of The Star’s decision on hiking the price of its print media.
According to The Star, they are seeking to expand the content they are offering and remain competitive in the challenging media landscape. This is the reason behind the price changes. Although The Star is taking measures in order to survive, this may cause a backlash to the newspaper company as people may seek cheaper alternatives or choose to move to digital media instead. This may cause a decline in print sales for the company.
In recent years, it is reported that The Star has been struggling to maintain its print sales due to changes in readers’ preferences and the rise of digital media. This rise has been especially apparent since the pandemic. People have been relying on digital media more nowadays because of how easily accessible and immediate it is.
Therefore, observers are predicting a decline in sales in print news after The Star’s announcement on its price revisions.
