It’s been a long wait, but “The Simpsons” fans are finally getting the movie sequel they’ve been asking for. The iconic American animated series has confirmed that a sequel to their 2007 movie is finally coming after 20 years.
On 30th September 2025 (Tuesday), 20th Century Studios and The Walt Disney Company shared a poster on social media, announcing a new “The Simpsons” movie. The poster depicts Homer Simpson grabbing a classic pink-frosted doughnut sprinkled with the number 2. Also written on the poster is the line, “Homer’s coming back for seconds,” and the movie’s United States release date, 23rd July 2027.

This upcoming movie marks the second movie under the franchise, 20 years after the release of the first one. The first “The Simpsons Movie” was released in 2007 and follows the famous animated family after Homer accidentally pollutes the town’s water supply, leading the Environmental Protection Agency to imprison the fictional Springfield. The film was a blockbuster, earning over US$500 million (approximately RM2.1 billion) in box office revenue.
The project is part of Disney’s 2027 release line-up, replacing an untitled Marvel movie that formerly held that spot on the calendar. However, the movie isn’t a last-minute project. It has been in the works for many years, since as early as 2014. Unfortunately, there are no details about the movie’s plot yet, but “The Simpsons” fans can expect to see something new for the Springfield family.

Fans have since reacted to the news, mostly excited about the new project. However, there were quips about the studio being “20 years too late”. Interestingly, some fans noted that the series had unintentionally predicted the two-decade delay. Two months after the first film’s release in 2007, the show’s Season 19 premiered with Bart’s famous chalkboard gags, with him writing, “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie.”
As they say, it’s better late than never. Of course, there’s still over a year until the release date, but are you already looking forward to a new “The Simpsons” movie?
