Ah, the “talking stage.” That confusing limbo where you’re not sure if you’re dating or just talking to someone you like. One minute, you’re vibing over memes, and the next, you’re wondering if they’re actually interested or just passing the time. It’s like a game of emotional Jenga – one wrong move, and you’re overthinking everything.

If you’ve found yourself questioning what’s going on, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Let’s break down how to handle the “talking stage” without stressing out over every text or getting lost in uncertainty.

The “Talking Stage”- What Is It Really?

In case you’ve been off the dating grid for a while, the “talking stage” is that fun yet confusing phase where you’re getting to know someone, but no one’s officially labeled it. Are you friends? Are you dating? Or something in between? It’s like the appetizer of relationships – light, fun, and sometimes leaving you wanting more.

The talking stage can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on how quickly things click. Some people rush through it, while others drag it out like a Netflix binge. Either way, you’re both figuring out if there’s potential for more – without rushing into “exclusive relationship” territory too soon.

Master The Art Of Casual Texting

You’re texting all day, every day, but that doesn’t mean you need to turn into a texting robot. Keep it chill and fun, or risk overthinking everything (and we all know where that leads: spiral city).

  • Stop Overanalysing Every Message: That moment when they text “K” and you wonder if it’s a sign of disinterest? Stop right there. A “K” doesn’t mean they’re mad. It probably means they’re busy or just don’t feel like typing a whole paragraph. Don’t give yourself a headache over every single reply. Chill, and keep the convo moving.
  • Keep It Light, Keep It Fun: The talking stage is like flirting with training wheels – no need for deep, existential conversations just yet. Send memes, talk about your favourite food, or compare playlists. The goal is to keep things fun and relaxed. Bonus points if you’re both cracking each other up with inside jokes.
  • Be Honest, But Don’t Spill Your Soul… Yet: You don’t need to pour your heart out on day one, but as time goes on, it’s important to gently bring up what you’re both looking for. If you’re unsure about whether you want a relationship, that’s okay – just communicate it. Being clear about your intentions helps avoid misunderstandings.

How To Handle The Uncertainty Without Losing It

The talking stage is a rollercoaster of excitement and confusion. You’re trying to figure out if they’re into you, but no one’s officially said it out loud. And honestly? It can make you lose sleep.

  • Don’t Assume the Worst: If they don’t text back in 20 minutes, it’s not because they’re plotting their escape. People have lives, and texting back immediately isn’t always top priority. So stop freaking out. They’re probably not ghosting you. You’ll be fine.
  • Ask The Right Questions (But Keep It Chill): You don’t need to grill them with 21 questions about their life goals on the first date. Keep it breezy, but also ask things that help you figure out if you’re on the same wavelength. “What’s your ideal weekend?” “Are you a night owl or an early bird?” Casual questions like this show interest without putting anyone on the spot.
  • Patience, Grasshopper: You don’t need to rush through the talking stage like you’re on some emotional fast track. Let it unfold naturally – don’t pressure them into defining the relationship before you’re both ready. Besides, the best things in life (like good food and good relationships) take time.

Social Media & Digital Cues

Social media – today’s ultimate relationship minefield. We’ve all been there, staring at likes, comments, and DMs, wondering if a heart emoji is a secret love confession or if we’re just overanalysing everything. It feels like you’re trying to crack a mysterious code. But here’s the deal:

  • Stop Obsessing Over Their Online Activity: They liked your post? Cool. They commented with a heart emoji? Sweet. But it’s probably not a declaration of love. Social media interactions are casual, so don’t treat every comment as some deep sign of their affection. Keep your head in the game and your heart in check.
  • Slide Into Their DMs Like A Pro: When you’ve been talking for a while and feel the vibe is right, why not hit them with a casual DM? Maybe react to their story or share a funny meme. Just don’t let social media replace real conversation. If you’re feeling bold, suggest hanging out IRL.

Are You Just Friends? Or Something More?

This is where things get tricky. You’ve been talking for a while, hanging out, and now you’re wondering if it’s just friendship or if something more is brewing. Spoiler alert: it’s not always easy to tell.

  • Look For The Signs: It’s the little things: staying up late texting, sending cute emojis, or making an effort to see each other more often. If you’re both putting in effort to keep the convo alive and are genuinely enjoying each other’s company, it’s a good sign things might be moving in a more-than-friends direction.
  • Talk About It (When It Feels Right): Eventually, you’ll need to address it. Don’t wait forever, but don’t bring it up on day one either. When the moment feels right, ask them where they’re at. Are they enjoying this or just bored? Be straightforward without making it feel like an interrogation. You want clarity, not a five-hour debate.

So, embrace the thrill of the talking stage – keep the texts flowing, share those belly-laugh moments, and let things unfold naturally. Don’t rush to slap a label on it or overanalyse every interaction. Instead, focus on enjoying the process, discovering each other’s quirks, and building a genuine connection.

Whether it evolves into something serious or fizzles out, this stage is a meaningful part of figuring out what you truly want. So relax, have fun, and let the journey guide you to whatever comes next – it might just surprise you!
