#Cabbies: Taxi Drivers Displeased With Supposed Collaboration With Uber

Yesterday, it was reported that a group of taxi companies and associations had shown interest in working with car-hailing app Uber.

The Gabungan Persatuan dan Syarikat-syarikat Teksi Semenanjung Malaysia (GPST) has agreed to sign memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Uber, but it seems like taxi drivers are displeased with this decision.

Although the GPST exclaimed that they wanted to “save the taxi industry”, it did not bode well for the cabbies. They were apparently left out in the dark and not consulted beforehand.

The MoU was supposed to take place in Sunway Lagoon, where around 100 drivers staged a protest to show their disapproval. As a result, the signing ceremony has been pushed to a later date.

The secretary of the Federal Territory and Selangor Indian taxi owners and drivers association, S. Balakrishnan, explained that he expects a clear explanation to be given to all drivers before any decision is implemented.

“Explain to us in detail about the commissions, discounts and the procedures involved because we are the ones who drive the taxi. Don’t make decisions in total disregard of taxi drivers,” he continued.

His sentiments were echoed by Klang Valley taxi drivers action committee chairman Zailani Isausuludin. Zailani said that he has submitted a memorandum to the GPST to stop the collaboration. He is also looking for a session with the representatives of taxi association to discuss the matter.
