Celebrity doppelgangers are everywhere, and some even make impersonating a star their career. Recently, Chinese social media have been buzzing about an online personality who bears a striking resemblance to Hong Kong film icon Stephen Chow (周星驰).
A Douyin user from mainland China has recently captivated netizens with his physical resemblance to Stephen Chow. The impersonator goes by Star (星) on the video-sharing platform, a reference to the comedic legend’s name. His replication of Stephen is so detailed, down to the actor’s signature white hair, expressive gaze and facial features.

According to reports, Star often hosts live streams on Douyin, where he chats with viewers and performs song covers. However, this is where his precise mimicry breaks. While the social media personality bears many physical similarities to Stephen, there is a noticeable difference in their vocals, both singing and speaking.
Many viewers noted that Star doesn’t have any of the actor’s unique vocal tones and cadence, which can be difficult to replicate. However, netizens praised the impersonator for being a near-perfect copy of Stephen without relying on artificial intelligence or technology to alter his looks or voice.

Star isn’t the only Stephen Chow impersonator to exist online because there have been many copycats of the actor in recent years. In fact, celebrity impersonation is a popular gig in mainland China. Jay Chou and Jackson Wang impersonators have even held live shows that spotlight their mimicry acts.
While celebrity impersonation is popular, it’s also a controversial subject, as some fans argue that it’s copyright infringement. For now, we can only hope that these impersonators, including Star, will be careful with their actions when they’re copying celebrities.
