Whether you admit it or not, the first Spider-Verse redefined the animated film scene and set the standards for what the pinnacle of animation should look like. Released back in 2018, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is a critically acclaimed film featuring the fan-favourite version of Spider-Man, Mile Morales, and is the first Marvel movie to tackle the concept of the multiverse. Furthermore, many believe it was this film that inspired and influenced the creation of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021.

Since its release, Spider-Verse has won the hearts of millions, including those of Guillermo del Toro, a veteran film director and screenwriter who recently won an Oscar for his stop-motion animated film, “Pinocchio.” The Mexican director has been very vocal about his love for the medium of animation. And with the sequel, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” inching closer to release, del Toro wishes the best for Sony’s magnum opus.

We are in a "Spartacus" moment in animation- and Spiderverse will mean a LOT to the medium. I am so happy about it being shepherded by creative, animation-loving minds and artists. I hope the very best for this film and every other film that tries to push the medium, the… https://t.co/3s8QodB1m5

In his Twitter account, del Toro wrote “Spiderverse will mean a LOT to the medium” and about how its influence transformed the landscape of animation. And he’s not wrong; many filmmakers and movie lovers alike have been using the 2018 film as a point of reference and comparison for recent animated films. Following its incredible success, several films and studios in recent years tried to replicate or were influenced by its style of animation, namely DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys” and “Puss in Boots 2.”

Regardless, both fans and del Toro are excited to see what the new Spider-Verse has to offer. One thing’s for certain: Sony will once again push the boundaries of the medium with their work, and perhaps we can start predicting how this film may change the landscape of animated films again. Let’s be real: if the trailer was able to impress a legendary filmmaker, we can’t wait to see what the first of this two-part film will have in store for us.
