The entertainment industry is in shock after it was reported that Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛), known fondly as Big S (大S), suddenly passed away on 2nd February 2025 (Sunday) from influenza complications. The news was confirmed by her sister, Taiwanese television host Dee Hsu (徐熙娣). The late star was 48 years old.
Dee confirmed the devastating news to Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS News on 3rd February 2025 (Monday), revealing that Barbie died due to flu-related pneumonia while on a family vacation to Japan. The star shared a tribute to her sister in her statement, writing, “I am grateful to have been her sister in this lifetime, to have cared for each other and accompanied each other. I will always be thankful for her and miss her forever. Shan~ Rest in peace! Love you always—Together, remember forever.”
Before Dee released her statement, a Facebook page sparked concern after posting about a prominent Taiwanese star who passed away while in Japan. While the post never directly mentioned it as Barbie, it hinted that it was the actress, who was known for her role in Meteor Garden (流星花園), leading many fans to begin fearing the star’s well-being. Concerns grew after Barbie’s family remained silent to the public’s inquiries.
Since the shocking announcements, fans have flooded social media to express sadness over the news. They also extended their condolences to Barbie’s family, including her husband, DJ Koo Jun Yup (구준엽). According to reports, the late star’s family will hold a funeral for her in Japan before bringing her ashes back to Taiwan. Her family is still negotiating a farewell ceremony to allow fans to pay their final respects to the actress.
Barbie shot to stardom following her breakout role as Dong Shancai in the Taiwanese drama “Meteor Garden”. During her lifetime, she also made headlines with her legal feud with ex-husband Wang Xiao Fei (汪小菲), who is the father of her two children. In 2022, she tied the knot with South Korean musician DJ Koo. Just days before her death, she was at a friend’s wedding ceremony with her husband.
