Glamour often clouds the eyes, tricking people into believing what they see. But, local actress Sherlyn Seo (萧丽玲) recently took to her socials to debunk the myth that all celebrities live glamorous lives.
The 28-year-old actress, born in Pulau Pinang, has been active in the entertainment scene since 2015. However, Sherlyn’s latest video on her social claims not only has it been hard being an actor in Malaysia, she’s also not been having an easy time in life!
Sherlyn Seo surprised fans when she uploaded a video showing her chatting with them. “Lately everyone might have thought I was doing well but I want to tell you that my good state has been ousted by life,” she said, adding she didn’t usually do such things as she felt she was not good at expressing herself.
“I am an actor, I’ve faced numerous challenges in my acting career, especially (since) being an actor in Malaysia is not easy,” Sherlyn said. She shared that she used to get “anxious and lost” as she noticed she didn’t get opportunities like other actors did. “Being an actor is (a) passive job, (your) income is also very passive,” she said wryly.
Sherlyn confessed that her anxiety made her feel like she was not good enough, and made her doubt her own abilities. “I began to doubt my own value. During this time, although it looked glamorous on social media, but in fact, in my heart, I have been “sick” for a long time,” she stated.
For Sherlyn, this “sickness” had her feeling tired and negative most of the time, always spotting her own flaws, and causing her to lose motivation in life. However, Sherlyn soon realised she needed to move forward in life. “I started spending time thinking, and realised this state is not what I want. I felt the need for a change,” she explained.
Sherlyn focused on letting go of her negative emotions and prioritising her internal growth. “I learned some new skills,” she added excitedly. “Since last year, I started learning the piano, and cultivated a reading habit. I even had a bold idea,” Sherlyn said. “I want to start my own sportswear brand and I’m currently working on it.”
The actress admitted she knew very little about business however, she was willing to explore other possibilities for herself. “Besides being an actor, I hope I can also be recognised as a female entrepreneur,” she stated, advising her followers to use anxiety to better themselves and not let it be a stumbling block in their way.
Well, kudos to Sherlyn Seo for pushing herself forward, and not letting life get her down! It’s certainly inspiring to see her pick herself back up despite being disheartened as an actress and put in effort to discover what other paths are available to her.
