You know how sometimes students might find a way to cheat their attendance for a certain class on certain days? The piece of paper would go around the class and we would sign for our friend who is absent on that day. Many of us are actually guilty of that but sometimes we just need days to ourselves.

We are in no way encouraging students to skip school or lie about their attendance but those days of signing for your friends may be over soon as this teacher from Johor installed a digital attendance system and surprisingly, students are actually excited about it.

A school teacher from SMK Seri Alam 2 Johor, that goes by the name of Cikgu Al Hafiz on TikTok, posted a series of videos that demonstrates how the digital attendance work. In the first video which gained almost 1 million views, we see a couple of his students scanning their IDs on a card scanner that’s mounted on their classroom wall. It pretty much works like an access card or when you clock in for work.

The second video with 2 million views shows the teacher mounting the scanner onto the wall. Other than the card scanner, we also see a monitor that displays the students’ name list and the Datang.my app. Netizens, including school students reacted to these series of videos with most being amazed by the digital attendance and some wish their school would implement this as well.

However, not all comments were positive. Some netizens showed concerns about the students’ safety as they might run into the card scanner mount which can cause serious injuries. Taking in every netizen’s feedback, Cikgu Al Hafiz took down the metal mounts and placed the card scanner onto the wall itself to prevent any injuries to the student as seen in the video below.

Signing your name on a piece of paper first thing in the morning can be tiring and teachers also may not have the energy to call out your names one by one so if you don’t believe students want this card scanning system to be implemented, here are some of the comments from the videos that says otherwise:

The digital attendance is not necessarily a new thing and some schools have implemented this system many years ago but they may be outdated. With newer technology, more schools should consider using these systems as it would encourage students to be more discipline.
