Sarawak is set to enter the commercial aviation scene with the launch of its state-owned airline, AirBorneo, which will begin flights on 14th January 2026. Ticket sales are now open, marking a major step in the state’s plans to strengthen regional connectivity.
The airline, a rebranded entity of MASwings following its acquisition by the Sarawak government in February 2025, will initially focus on regional routes within Sarawak and Sabah. Economy return fares from Kuching to Sibu start at around RM482, while a return trip from Kota Kinabalu to Miri costs about RM548. The base fare includes 20kg checked baggage, seat selection, an in-flight meal, and a 7kg hand-carry allowance.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg confirmed that AirBorneo will start operations using ATR and Twin Otter propeller aircraft, before transitioning to jet services by July 2026. “Next month, AirBorneo will start flying, and we will use propeller aircraft first, then in July we will begin jet operation,” he said.
The Premier highlighted plans for international expansion, including direct flights to Singapore and South Korea. Regarding Singapore, he recalled a meeting with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong: “He said, ‘Is it true that you are going to have an airline?’ I said yes, starting next month.” Abang Johari also expressed interest in connecting Sarawak’s geoparks with Jeju Island in South Korea to boost tourism.
AirBorneo’s cabin crew uniforms are being finalised and will reflect Sarawak’s cultural identity. “We want to compete with AirAsia, but the uniforms will not be too revealing. We have our own culture,” the Premier added.
The airline has assured passengers that the transition from MASwings to AirBorneo will be seamless, with no impact on existing bookings. Tickets for travel from 14th January onwards are available via AirBorneo’s website or call centre, while flights before that date can still be booked through MASwings.
