Over the years, Malaysia has been represented by countless beauty queens in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant. Sadly, it has been decades since we secured a place in the top 30, but just recently Sandra Lim Shue Hui, or simply Sandra Lim (林雪卉), secured a place among the top 30 out of 125 contestants at this year’s pageant in Mexico City.
According to reports, this achievement makes her the second Malaysian representative in history, since 1970, to reach this stage of the competition, following Josephine Lena Wong. “I’m very grateful and honoured to represent Malaysia. I have always aimed for a placement and it has been my dream to make Malaysia proud,” said the beauty queen. Many of you may be familiar with her work but in case you’re not, then here are 5 fun facts about Miss Universe Malaysia:
1. She once went viral for helping a fallen presenter at Miss Global 2022

A few years ago, all eyes were on Sandra after the model quickly responded to an incident during a live broadcast of Miss Global 2022 in Bali, Indonesia. The 24-year-old was seen rushing to help the presenter, who had fallen into a hole on stage. She crouched down and extended her hand to ensure he was okay, while crew members hurried to assist him. Her selfless act won the hearts of many.

2. She suffered an injury a few days before the Miss Universe 2024 pageant

In an interview with NST, Sandra revealed that she had suffered a head injury a few days before competing in the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City. “Two days before ‘pageant week’, I was filming a movie when I hit my head on the pavement and started bleeding. I was so worried I might faint. I had to balance work and the competition. This month alone, I stayed up late for four to five days preparing for this event. That determination is what I want to showcase to the world. Whatever we aim for, as long as we put our heart and soul into it, we can achieve it,” she said.
3. She’s a martial artist

Sandra Lim is more than just a beauty; she is also a skilled martial artist. The Miss Universe Malaysia winner once showcased her Wushu skills in several Instagram Reels earlier this year, which impressed her fans. Apart from Wushu, she’s also been taking Jiujitsu classes. While wearing the Princess Walinong Sari-inspired costume at the recent Miss Universe 2024 pageant, she also demonstrated her sword skills on stage.
4. She performed in a Chinese orchestra & theatre show

Who says beauty queens only know how to look pretty on stage? Definitely not Sandra Lim. Showcasing her martial arts skills and knowledge, the young artist once performed in a Chinese orchestra theatre show alongside singer Lenny Ooi (阿水黄得伟). As seen in the photos above, Sandra was suspended in the air with a prop sword in her hand, further proving that she was not afraid to do her own stunts.
5. She appeared in the TVB drama “The Heir To The Throne”

You may have heard that “The Heir To The Throne” was partially filmed in Malaysia so it also makes sense to have Malaysian acts appear in the show. Sandra Lim not only made a cameo in the series but she also filmed two kissing scenes with male lead Raymond Lam (林峯). In an interview with China Press, Sandra revealed this was her first role in a major project since her debut and that the kiss was her first on-screen kiss.
We personally would like to congratulate Sandra Lim on her latest achievement of breaking the 53-year drought at the Miss Universe competition. May she continue to continue to make Malaysia proud!
