Sam Smith On Their Struggle During Covid-19 Lockdown

Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, lockdown blues are a real thing. However, while we are all affected by some sort of restriction imposed to curb the spread of this deadly virus, each individual is believed to be affected by it in a different manner.

This was the case when it came to Sam Smith’s “meltdown” after UK went into its first lockdown back in March. The “Stay With Me” singer shared an Instagram post of them looking quite distraught about going into quarantine at that time, which later received significant backlash from their followers.

The now deleted Instagram post’s caption read, “Stages of a quarantine meltdown.” This rubbed fans the wrong way as they accused the award winning singer of complaining even though Smith was in a more privileged condition than most others during this tough period.

Following these criticisms, Smith clarified their statement on “Heart Breakfast” explaining, “It wasn’t (a meltdown). It was more – it was six weeks ago I posted a picture and everyone else was posting pictures, it was probably bad timing of me, but I use my social media as if it’s just my friends on it.”

The British pop star also recalled this issue again when appearing on “The One Show” yesterday (5th November). They explained that they were used to constantly travelling and being on tour, so to suddenly be at home for weeks on end was a “weird time” for the singer-songwriter.

“Yeah, I found it hard, I’ve been travelling for eight years and I hadn’t been in my house for more than three weeks in eight years,” explained Smith. “I was living with my sister, and I’m still going to be with her in the next four weeks, and she helped me out and we buckled down and did fun stuff. But it’s a weird time,” added the 28-year-old Grammy Award winner.

However the “Dancing with a Stranger” singer also explained that it’s been good for them to get a break, as performing in front of large crowds has been giving them anxiety. “I get so anxious in front of people on stage. I was getting so anxious towards the end of last year. So, it’s been good for me to have a break,” said the UK national.

Nonetheless, the singer did claim to miss “sweaty rooms, people together and music being shared.”

For those of you that may be wondering why Sam Smith is referred to as ‘their’ instead of ‘him’, it’s because Smith is non-binary.

This means that an individual doesn’t see themselves as either a male or a female, and they ask that people don’t identify them as ‘him’ or ‘her’ when describing them.
