The South Korean music industry mourns the loss of a prominent figure. Music critic Kim Youngdae (김영대), best known for his insightful critiques on the K-pop idol scene, has passed away. He was 48.
According to reports, the music critic passed away on Christmas Eve (24th December 2025, Wednesday). On Christmas Day (25th December 2025, Thursday), his family announced his passing via his social media pages, writing, “We humbly bring the news that Kim Youngdae has passed away. We are sorry he couldn’t greet you in person.”

His family didn’t reveal the cause of death, but has shared details of his memorial service and final resting place. The funeral mass will take place on 27th December 2025 (Saturday), followed by the burial on the same day. Kim Youngdae’s final resting place is at the Seoul Memorial Park, with interment at the Peace Rest Area.
Kim Youngdae’s work as a music critic has been widely recognised by South Korean and international K-pop fans alike. After graduating from Yonsei University with a degree in Business Administration, he earned a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Washington (UW). He was also featured in international media such as Vulture magazine and MTV.

The respected public figure was also a member of the judging panel for the Korean Music Awards and the MAMA Awards, underscoring the significance of his insights on K-pop music. One of his most recognisable works is his book on BTS (방탄소년단), titled “BTS The Review: A Comprehensive Look at the Music of BTS”.
Kim Youngdae had always approached the K-pop industry with rare insight, intellectual honesty and respect for the music and its talents. He rightfully earned the title of “K-pop expert”, and he will be missed. We extend our condolences to his family, and may he rest in peace.
