You either look forward to it, or you dread the release of the movie. There’s no other way around it. And yes, we’re talking about the upcoming “Power Rangers” reboot.

However, long-time “Power Rangers” fans may be pleased to know that director Dean Israelite was a fan of the television series as well, so there’s less chance that Israelite will squander the chance to make the reboot into anything less than stellar. The director also said that the movie will take on a “playful but still mature” mood, indicating that the reboot may be targeted at older audience, and not children.

In an interview with IGN, Israelite said:

I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way. It had this wonderful character that’s essential to going on a fantastic adventure. I remember it as a kid. I grew up with it in South Africa. When I opened the script I had no idea how it was going to be updated, and I was really impressed by it. (…) There were a lot of guys going out for it and saw the potential in it, so I put a really big presentation together and was lucky enough to get the job.

The director also revealed the state of the project now:

We’re in sort of a soft pre-production right now, doing a lot of design work and re-imagining the world. It’s really cool and exciting.

We’re just at the beginnings of (castings). We’re going to be shooting soon, so yes, I’m hoping news of that is going to come out in the next few months.

He also expressed that the reboot will be humorous:

(The movie) needs to be completely playful, and it needs to be really fun and funny. (…) I hope it’s going to feel very grounded at the same time, and very contemporary and have a real edge to it, and a real gut to it. So I think it’s going to be a fun, joyful (movie) but one that feels completely grounded in a real world, with real characters going through real things.

“Power Rangers” is a long-running franchise built around a team of costumed superheroes of the same name. It is derived from Japanese superhero live action series “Super Sentai”, but the “Power Rangers” series is different in that it is adapted to incorporate American culture and also to conform to American television standards. The American children series started its run in 1993, and has since evolved into a more comprehensive franchise, with merchandise, video games, and feature films spawned from its main source.

The series revolves around a group of superheroes, dressed in colour-coded skintight spandex uniforms, as they battle a different villain every episode. Each Rangers possess different forms of superpowers, such as super-speed or invisibility. Generally, all Rangers also have superhuman strength, durability, and are familiar with hand-in-hand combat.

Zack Stentz and Ashley Milley, who both worked together in “Thor” and “X-Men: First Class“, will be writing the script for the reboot that will be released on 13th January 2017. It was originally slated for release on 22nd July 2016, but Lionsgate Entertainment pushed back the release date without citing any reasons.
