Video games are meant to be enjoyed by everyone in any way possible. Some enjoy video games for their stories while others only care about damage output when dealing with enemies. There are also gamers who are heavily invested in the games’ artwork.

Developers spent countless hours perfecting these video games so that fans can enjoy them to the fullest. Popular studios were obviously behind some popular games but have you ever wondered if Malaysia has lend a hand in developing your favourite video games?

1. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016)

Starting off our list is the 4th installment of the Uncharted game series which was the inspiration behind the 2022 movie adaptation starring Tom Holland. The development for “A Thief’s End” was led by Naughty Dog and got some help from Malaysian studio, Passion Republic. The studio contributed in the 2D in-game art, environment assets and treasures modeling.

2. Elden Ring (2022)

This game was recently released back in February earlier this year and took the world by storm. “Elden Ring” is an action role-playing fantasy game that was released by Bandai Namco Entertainment in collaboration with famous fantasy novelist George R.R Martin.

Malaysia’s very own Passion Republic lent their hands again in this project by contributing in the modeling and animation of the game. It’s simply astounding that the beauty you appreciated in the game was created by fellow Malaysians.

3. Little Nightmares II (2021)

One of the most popular survival-horror video games in 2021. The sequel to “Little Nightmares”, players will now play as the young boy Mono, who also appeared in the first game. Players must find their way out while avoiding traps, obstacles and scary monsters.

Streamline Studios from Kuala Lumpur helped develop some of these scary monster characters such as The Teacher, The Hunter and The Patients.

4. Street Fighter V (2016)

Streamline Studios also helped with a childhood favourite game. The first Street Fighter game was released back in 1987 as an arcade game and then made its way to video game consoles in the 1990s. Streamline Studios once again was involved in the making the 5th installment of this iconic game.

The company contributed in multiple character designs including the famous Chun Li training outfits as well as her undercover and vacation costumes.

5. The Last Of Us: Part II (2020)

Passion Republic bagged another project for their portfolio and this time it’s one of the biggest games of 2020. The sequel to the zombie apocalypse survival game “The Last Of Us” had everyone on the edge of the seats and crying their eyes out.

The Malaysian studio is responsible for multiple things for this project; concept art, graphic design and storyboard for extended commercial. They also contributed in the playable environment and prop modelling. The duration of this project took 4 years from 2016 to 2020.

6. Rachet & Clank: Rift Apart (2021)

Millennials will remember the time this game was first released on the PS2. “Rachet & Clank” were popular among kids growing up in the early 2000s. The 16th installment of the video game series was released last year in 2021 and they got help from our developers.

Malaysian animation and gaming studio, LemonSky Studios got involved for the PS5 game project where they contributed in the concept art, 3D modelling and ultimate trimming.

7. Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier (2021)

Many grew up with the Final Fantasy game series. First released in 1987 on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the game grew to become one of the most popular and beloved video games among gamers all over the world.

LemonSky Studios managed to hit the jackpot by getting involved with the latest installment released back in November 2021. The studio got down and dirty with the game’s concept art, 3D modelling and rigging.

We should all feel proud that these Malaysian studios got some incredible talents with them to be able to add these projects in their resumes. Honestly, they deserve more recognition. Which one of these games are your favourites?
