Imagine finding a random suitcase in the middle of a mall parking lot, and when you open it, it’s filled with loads of cash wads that amount to half a million. While it sounds like a scene from a movie, the incident was a reality for a security guard at a Damansara mall.

According to Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan, the police department received a report from the security guard who discovered the pink-and-white suitcase on Wednesday (20th March). The man in his 30s said he found the suitcase at 8am, likely during his shift at the mall.

Upon further inspection, the bag contained RM10, RM50 and RM100 bank notes. Hussein said the total amount was over RM500,000. He said, “We (the police) believe the money is genuine, but we will check with Bank Negara Malaysia.”

Unfortunately, there were no closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the area where the suitcase was left. The police are searching for whoever the owner may be. Hussein said anyone who lost such a substantial sum could come to the Petaling Jaya police station or contact them at 03-79662222 to claim the money after providing evidence. He added that if the money is unclaimed, the police will surrender the case to the court for further action.

Meanwhile, the security guard received tons of praise from netizens for his honesty. Many also said he should receive a medal for his service. However, some also joked that they wouldn’t surrender the suitcase if they were in his position. Some netizens also began speculating where the money came from and what it was potentially for. A company in Shah Alam did claim the suitcase and alleged money was theirs, but police are still investigating the report.

We hope the money will be safely returned to its owner – but if you have information regarding the suitcase or the cash, do not hesitate to contact the Petaling Jaya police station.
