Earlier this week, the Urban and Rural Planning Department unveiled its list of top 10 happiest cities in Malaysia. It was in conjunction with the International Day of Happiness.
The department explained that these places were picked based on the population’s well-being that includes health and mental as well as physical well-being.

The top 10 happiest cities are:
- Jasin, Melaka
- Kuala Terengganu
- Seremban
- Kulai, Johor
- Taiping, Perak
- Kuantan, Pahang
- Bentong, Pahang
- Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah
- Yan, Kedah
- Jeli, Kelantan
The happiness index – a study from 2013 to 2019 involving 60,000 Malaysian respondents – is one of the indicators in Malaysian Urban Rural National Indicators Network for Sustainable Development (MURNInets). It looks into “happiness with family and relatives, pleasure in working, relationship with neighbours, community activities and environmental quality”.
