Police have arrested a man in Penang for holding his own mother hostage and causing injuries to the woman. The man in his 40s also threatened to take his life by blowing up his apartment unit using petroleum gas barrels.

According to the Penang Fire and Rescue Department, rescuers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of the incident at 10.57pm on Tuesday, 13th February. The rescuers rushed to the apartment in Jelutong, where the man held his mother hostage. Reports also state that the 65-year-old woman also suffered injuries inflicted by her son.

In addition to injuring his mother and holding her hostage, the man also threatened to commit suicide by detonating two barrels of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Police and fire rescue personnel tried to calmly persuade the man to release his mother and turn himself in. However, their attempts failed and they resorted to breaking down the door to arrest the man. Authorities also ordered personnel to initiate pressure steam in preparation for any possible fire.

After police broke into the apartment unit, the man released his elderly mother. The 65-year-old is currently receiving treatment for her injuries at a nearby hospital. The suspect was arrested and taken to the police station for further investigation. Authorities could not confirm the motive for his action but noted that he was very emotional and aggressive during the arrest. The operation ended about three hours later at 2.46am.
