Good people bring out the good in other people.

A char kuey kak (fried radish cake) hawker mobile cart in George Town, Penang was severely damaged by a drunk driver on Saturday (21st May) morning and the Facebook campaign seeking donations for the cart owner, known as Ms. Ooi, has managed to raise RM2,000.

The Facebook fundraising campaign was created by a Michigan native freelance food writer, Robyn Eckhardt, after she witnessed the accident on Aceh Street. She posted up a plea, accompanied by a photo of the destroyed food cart, in hopes to raise repair money for Ms. Ooi’s cart.

“She will be idle for as long as it takes to fix her cart. She is lucky she wasn’t killed, but this is a financial calamity for her. Penang-ites, Malaysians, and all lovers of Penang: Will you help one of its best, hardest-working hawkers recover from this accident?” wrote the writer.

As at time of writing, the successful fundraising initiative has been put on hold until the hawker cart owner is able to assess the exact cost of repairs.

The writer added that she will update interested donors if more money is needed for the repair and said, “What happened to Ms. Ooi sucks, but your response has been amazing. Thank you!”

According to NST, Robyn Eckhardt is a freelance writer for The New York Times, among other publications, and currently lives in Penang.
