Mothers are meant to be one of your biggest supporters growing up. Unfortunately, not all moms are good moms. Chinese actress Peace (何嫔) can certainly attest to that.
The former member of the Chinese baseball cheerleading team CT Girls recently appeared on the show “单身行不行” to share her experiences growing up. However, her childhood was heavily marred by her mother and her controlling behaviour. Peace’s story left many, including her, in tears.
“Peace,” the show’s host started, with a most curious question. “You have been afraid of your mother since you were a child. Can you tell us why?” Peace let out a quiet hum before admitting, “From the moment I was conscious (of my life), my mother was very cruel to me.”
The actress shared that her home life had never been great. “My father was not at home much because he was addicted to gambling and our financial situation was not good. I was (also) often beaten and scolded for no reason at home,” she said. Peace claimed things finally made some sense when she saw a transcript of her household registration one day.
“My dad is not my biological dad. I don’t know who he is,” she clarified. “But I think, maybe my mother didn’t have a good relationship with her ex-boyfriend (my biological father) so she took her hatred out on me.” Peace added that the news had relieved her. “It’s like, it isn’t (because of) me,” she said. But, the possible explanation for her mother’s actions did not sooth the hurt inflicted on her.
Peace shared that she had been expected to help contribute towards the family’s finances once she graduated junior high. “Life became unbearable then,” she admitted with a slight hitch in her voice. She had apparently worked as a cashier in a wholesale store for about a year before persuading her mother to allow her to return to her studies. But, her brother was spared from work as her mother often favoured him over her.
Growing up, her mother also consistently violated her boundaries. One traumatic incident was when her mother brought her to the obstetrics and gynecology department after discovering she had a crush on a senior in junior high. “She thought I got involved with the senior,” Peace stated. Her mother had been present with the male doctor when they checked her lower half, and the doctor told her mother: “Don’t worry, your daughter’s hymen is still there.”
But, things got worse after she graduated high school. Her mother had gently pleaded for her help in earning money for the family and her plea moved Peace. Despite not fully understanding what her mother truly meant as she had not yet turned 18, she agreed but was caught off-guard when her mother sent her to work at a nightclub.
“It lasted for three months until I couldn’t stand it anymore. My mother (had) started buying me revealing clothes and would search my whole body when I got home. She was afraid I would hide (the) money. She would also check with the (front) counter to see if I had stolen any money,” Peace said. “I couldn’t stand it anymore. (I) sacrificed so much for (this) family, why do you treat me like this?”
Peace then made the decision to leave her family. However, it was not the last time she was in contact with them. As it turns out, her mother was later hospitalised for terminal cervical cancer. Peace received calls from her family, asking her to return to meet her mother one last time. Unwillingly she turned up, only to be shocked by her mother’s appearance.
“Her whole body was swollen and the whites of her eyes were (red) with blood, but she didn’t speak when she saw me. She shed bloody tears and passed (just) like that,” Peace stated. Her mother’s passing had initially relieved her, but later, Peace shared she felt different about the situation. She questioned why her mother had neither left her a message nor an apology. “(If she had), I feel I might be better off now,” she said.
Many were quick to sympathise with Peace, with some praising her efforts in life and cheering her on. Several also advised her to place value in her own self-worth rather than seek her mother’s impossible love. “I’m cheering for you, Peace!” one netizen declared. “There are many unfair things in the world, but you will definitely find happiness.”
Well, there’s no denying the hard-knock life Peace has had. Still, she seems to be doing fairly well for herself now as a game and program show host. Hopefully she’ll be able to make peace with her mother’s actions someday.
