Malaysia has always been a pretty popular tourist spot, as it turns out, even for other countries’ royalties. Unfortunately, King Harald V of Norway’s holiday here got interrupted when he fell sick unexpectedly.

Even monarchs need some time off and it’s flattering to know that Norway’s King Harald decided to spend his holiday here in Malaysia. Regretfully, he hasn’t been able to fully enjoy his time here as he reportedly has fallen ill.

The Norwegian royal household announced yesterday (27th February), that King Harald is currently hospitalised in Malaysia due to an infection. “The king receives good care from both Malaysian and Norwegian medical personnel,” they added in their statement.

Reportedly, it had been revealed two days before his birthday that the 87-year-old king would be taking a private trip abroad. However, the dates and destination of King Harald V’s trip were not shared.

King Harald V has been Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991. He is also Europe’s oldest living monarch. However, in recent years, he’s been repeatedly hospitalised with infections, and has also undergone heart surgery. 50-year-old Crown Prince Haakon is currently presiding in his father’s absence.

It’s regretful to hear that King Harald of Norway has fallen sick while here. We sincerely wish him a speedy recovery and hope that he’ll still be able to enjoy his time here.

Update (29th February 2024, 3:15pm):

King Harald V of Norway’s condition is currently “improving“, according to a statement issued by the Royal House of Norway on Wednesday (28th February). It was reportedly confirmed by the king’s personal physician who is also currently in Langkawi. “His majesty is well taken care of at the hospital and is receiving good treatment,” the statement said. “His majesty will remain at the hospital for a few more days. No decision has been made regarding his return home.”
