Uber Releases Statement Regarding “Illegal” Claims

Following the piece that The Sun Daily wrote titled, “UBER transport service is illegal“, Uber KL has released a statement via their blog. This is of course coming after Malay Mail Online wrote a piece titled, “Uber passengers up in arms after false reports of ban“. The only natural thing to do after that (for Uber) was to share their thoughts.

And they have.

In their blog, they touched on the topics that were some of the main concerns of the Land Public Transportation Commission (SPAD) such as the safety of the vehicles Uber uses in their service and the safety of its passengers.

On top of that, Uber explained about the kind of safety and accountability that their technology (mobile app) provides for its users. As for the claim that Uber has not responded to SPAD’s calls or e-mails, they’ve also stated that, moving forward, they’re open to discussions with governmental and non-governmental parties.

Read their “Uber KL – The Facts” post here:

Since arriving in Kuala Lumpur (KL) 9 months ago, we’ve seen overwhelming support from riders, many of whom have taken to social media, to advocate for the benefits Uber brings. We also appreciate the Land Public Transportation Commission (S.P.A.D)’s acknowledgement that “…many users are satisfied and happy with services provided by Uber”!

There’s been a lot of discussion about KL’s transportation ecosystem – and the way Uber delivers safe, reliable and convenient alternatives to Malaysians. Unfortunately, champions of the status quo want to limit your transportation options. They are preventing KL from moving forward.

The Deputy President of the Gabungan Persatuan dan Syarikat-Syarikat Teksi Semenanjung Malaysia (GABUNGAN), Datuk Mohd Alias Abdul took to the media with Executive Director of Sunlight Radio Taxi Service Sdn Bhd, Ab Jalil Maarof to try and scare Malaysians away from Uber. So we think it’s a good time to clarify a few facts:

1. SAFETY is at the core of what we do. Our stringent process ensures that all Uber partners and their vehicles undergo a rigorous background check and thorough inspection, so when you ride with Uber, you know that you’re riding with a safe and highly qualified driver with full insurance coverage. Our technology uses unprecedented safety and accountability measures built right into the app:

  • Driver profiles – You’ll see your driver’s name, license plate number, photo, and rating when your request is confirmed — you’ll know who’s picking you up ahead of time.
  • Share my ETA – Uber riders can share the real-time movement of their ride with loved ones or business associates to keep up with their journey’s progress, etc
  • Real-time feedback – Uber riders can rate their experience after every ride. Driver partners who do not provide a good rider experience will be removed.
  • Instant receipt – Riders receive an email summary of the route, and fare breakdown to ensure that the driver took the best route.

2. We bring competition to an industry that hasn’t evolved in years. This competition benefits riders and drivers, and raises the safety, quality and service levels offered by the industry.

3. Uber benefits the economy by generating a new source of income for thousands of driver partners and providing expanded transport options for everyone.

4. Uber gives car owners a high quality and extremely affordable reason to be a passenger rather than drive their own vehicles. This helps reduce the number of vehicles on the congested roads of KL.

Uber welcomes the chance to discuss with government and non-government officials how innovation can help transform KL’s transportation system. Having meaningful conversations based on facts is important to us.

Riders in 180 cities around the world are flocking to Uber because of the safety, convenience and reliability it brings to for-hire transportation. We want to keep KL moving in the safest, most efficient way possible and we will continue to put consumer choice and safety and driver opportunity first.

We invite you to share your thoughts with us and S.P.A.D. @Uber_KL, and ‪@SPADchannel.

Meanwhile, here are the top 10 reasons why we think Uber should be allowed to go on, without disruptions (if any).
