Netizens are always curious (or just plain busybody) people. They always want to know everything, especially of famous celebrities. From their daily lifestyles to their significant other, fans tend to feel entitled to know everything regarding their favourite celebrities.
A day ago, Malaysian internet celebrity, Stella Chen (曾乐晴), announced her marriage proposal through Instagram. From the post, her soon-to-be husband’s face was not revealed to the public.
Following Stella’s announcement, she received a lot of negative comments on not showing her boyfriend’s face. Netizens were unhappy as to why she is keeping her tall beau’s looks private. After all, aren’t they about to walk down the aisle soon? So why the secrecy?
- “Why did you not take photos showing his face?”
- “You’re getting married soon, why are you so afraid to reveal your boyfriend’s face? Is he very ugly? 😂”
- “My first time seeing someone getting married yet I don’t know what the guy looks like.”
In respond to these comments, she posted on her stories a couple of hours later addressing the nasty comments she received regarding future husband.
“There’s a kind of philosophy called respect. Please respect another’s privacy. Be an adult with common sense. Don’t use your rude and arrogant opinions to hurt your own image. Not everyone likes to be made public. When I first get to know him, he didn’t use any social medias like IG or FB. I’m really thankful that he’s willing to accept and bear the burden of dating a public figure. So, I have the responsibility to protect my lover, to protect his private life and peace,” Stella explained.
Later, after receiving a lot of support for speaking up, the beauty posted another Instagram story thanking her fans.
“Thank you for all your support, and for telling me not to get angry because I’m pregnant. In all honesty, I’m not angry, after all, I’ve been managing social medias for so many years. I’ve been just laughing it off when coming across negative comments. If there’s any problems, come at me. I’ll especially care a lot when you involve my family or significant other, I’ll feel indignant on their behalf. They did nothing wrong so why would you want to drag them in? I also get that these low quality keyboard warriors say stuff without using their brains. You also have a family, at the end of the day, you need to be responsible for your words and actions. Family is forever the baseline.”
Just like Stella said, we need to learn how to respect others’ privacy. As much as celebrities are in the spotlight constantly, they are humans too, give them the privacy they need.
