Salary transparency has been much debated in Malaysia lately, with employers and employees sharing their perspectives. Many believe salary transparency will help with pay equality, while others think the info should remain confidential.
In an interview with Malaysian Pay Gap, an Instagram account advocating salary transparency in Malaysia, a local man shared his opinion about whether employees should know how much their colleagues earn. According to the man, he is against disclosing salary to colleagues because he believes that information may cause dissatisfaction and tension.
When asked whether or not his choice can lead to unfair salaries, he said it doesn’t concern him. He believes money isn’t everything because work environment, skill development and career satisfaction are more important. The interview has since garnered over 100,000 views, with many netizens sharing divided responses to the interviewee’s answer. Here’s what they say:
Salaries Should Be Disclosed
Many netizens who disagreed with the man said salaries must be discussed amongst colleagues to ensure salary transparency. Some said that not disclosing the amount can lead to employees being underpaid and getting taken advantage of by employers. Others also mentioned that the man’s answer reflects the older generation’s mindset towards work, which is no longer relevant in today’s work environment.
Salaries Should Remain Private & Confidential
However, a few did side with the man, saying that your salary should never be shared with your colleagues and only discussed with your employers. Some believe discussing salaries can cause unnecessary tension in the workplace or resentment towards someone earning more.
Salary Can Be Disclosed But Not Amongst Peers
Those who remained neutral on the issue said that salaries can be shared, if one is comfortable doing so, but preferably not with colleagues. Many also felt that if an employee is concerned about fair pay, they should look at the market value of their position, instead of asking their colleagues about their earnings.
