Corruption within the law enforcement community isn’t new news but a recent case of a police officer’s wife stealing two of his Rolex watches has raised concerns amongst the public.

On 12th October, news outlets reported that 41-year-old Datuk Mou Ei Leen @ Eileen Mou was charged with stealing two Rolex branded watches that belonged to her husband, a police officer from Ipoh. According to reports, the woman allegedly stole a Rolex Sky-Dweller (Model 326135) and a Rolex GMT Master-II (Model 116718LN) worth more than RM400,000.

After the news spread on social media, many netizens reacted to the story in shock – but not towards the theft. Instead, they turned their attention to the cop, questioning how a police officer could afford such an expensive timepiece. Many said that it is suspicious that a public servant could afford a Rolex, let alone own two watches from the luxury brand.

One netizen even joked that the officer must have won the lottery for weeks to be able to afford the watches. Despite the argument that the cop has another source of income, many just concluded that the Rolexes were the result of corruption. Some netizens have urged authorities to investigate the police officer. As the Rolexes were stolen from a house used for storage, many have also suggested that the house be searched.

While the issue is concerning for many Malaysians, it is still important to acknowledge the police officers who uphold the law and maintain a sense of honesty and integrity.
