The rising cost of living has affected tons of food businesses, causing them to increase their prices to reflect the rising cost of raw ingredients. However, this man’s complaint about an expensive meal has netizens wondering if it’s a case of overcharging or just costly ingredients.
Steven Goh lamented the price of his mixed rice meal in a posting in the Puchong News Group Facebook group. In his post, the man wrote, “RM28 mixed rice. A serving of meat and a serving of vegetables (maybe it costs more for the pork). But RM28 + no price tag + not bought at Pavilion mall but at an ordinary store at Kinrara. Maybe the next time you buy mixed rice, ask for the price of every dish before scooping. I’ve already put it into my lunchbox, so I only have myself to blame.”
According to the post, Steven purchased the meal from a rice stall at Bandar Kinrara, Puchong. He said he had already placed the dishes in his lunchbox before knowing the price of each dish, but since it would be unhygienic to put the dishes back, he had no choice but to pay for his meal. However, he also admitted that he should’ve asked for the price before scooping the dishes into his lunchbox.
In the comments section, many netizens have reacted to the post, showing their shock at the RM28 price tag for the meal. Many were surprised that a plate of mixed rice would cost so much, even urging Steven to lodge a report against the restaurant. Netizens also lament that many mixed rice stalls are not worth it because owners tend to take advantage of customers by deliberately not displaying prices.
However, some noted that pork is pricier these days, which could be why Steven’s meal costs more. Other netizens advised not to use personal containers when ordering mixed rice, adding that mixed rice stalls tend to charge more if customers use their containers because the workers can’t estimate the prices.
