Last December, parents around the world collectively let out a sigh of relief after Idina Menzel cleared up all the rumours and speculations about the sequel for Disney’s “Frozen“. Though she was hoping that Disney will develop a sequel, she admitted that she had “no idea” about the future of the movie.
During an interview with Buzzfeed, Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, the co-creators of “Frozen” further debunked the rumours by admitting that they are unsure of what to do next.
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Snow Queen”, “Frozen” follows the epic journey of a fearless princess Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell), who goes on the search of her sister Queen Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel), whose icy powers trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter.
The 3D computer-animated music fantasy-comedy film is the 53rd animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. It was ranked as the highest-grossing animated film of all time and it received strongly positive reviews from the critics and the audiences. The movie even received various prestigious awards at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, the BAFTA Awards, the Grammy Awards, and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.
But despite its massive commercial success, the director duo confirmed that a sequel is not in the works yet.
Buck debunked the sequel rumours by saying:
It’s been in the press that we are doing it, and we would ask each other, “Are we?”
Even though the duo already made a 7-minute animated short sequel titled “Frozen Fever“, they confessed that they don’t even have in a story in mind yet, let alone a script:
It all comes down to the story. Like with the short, it was so daunting until we found the story. Then it was all of the things it usually is and we were thinking of every emotion and moment and feeling. I think that’s all we can do. Until we find our way into what’s next, emotionally, it will feel too big. We just finished the short two weeks ago. One year ago, it was a lot to even think about doing a short. We were quite tired. We don’t really know what it’s like to stop for a minute and think about what we want to do next.
“There is a bit of that drop-the-mic thing,” Buck added. “Just go, [drops mic] ‘I don’t know what else to do.’
Of course, if Disney insists on developing a sequel, we are sure that the duo just need a little more time to figure out what they can do next.
Meanwhile, the animated short sequel, “Frozen Fever” will debut in theatres exclusively ahead of Kenneth Branagh’s live-action “Cinderella” on 13th March.
