How much gore is too much?

There’s just something about gore, something so twisted, so sick and yet so interesting (if done right) despite all the blood and horror. Something that sparks one’s curiosity and makes one wonder, “What in God’s name what this director thinking when he directed this movie?” or “How sick that this director or scriptwriter have to be to come up with something like this?”

At the same, it also makes the same person wonder how sick he/she has to be watching these kind of films, to enjoy this kind of films – at least that’s how it works for us. If you’re like us and if you prefer your scary movies movies brutally violent instead of bloodless, here are 15 of the most twisted and gory films, presented in non-chronological order.

P/S: Major gore ahead, proceed at your own risk. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

1. A Serbian Film (2010)

Directed by Srđan Spasojević, A Serbian Film revolves around Milos, a retired porn star who is struggling to make ends meet as he leads a normal life with his wife Maria and six-year-old son Petar. A random and sudden call from his former colleague Layla changes everything as she introduces Milos to Vukmir, a mysterious, menacing and politically powerful figure in the pornographic business. Well aware of Milos’ financial problems, Vukmir offers Milos a leading role in his production which will provide financial support to Milos and his family for the rest of their lives.

The only catch was, Milos had to sign a contract insisting on his absolute unawareness of a script they will shoot. From there, Milos is drawn into a maelstrom of unbelievable cruelty and mayhem as part of making a pedophilia and necrophilia-themed snuff film.

2. Martyrs (2008)

Without wanting to risk ruining your Martyrs experience, we shall not reveal too much about the movie. Because honestly, the less you know, the better. All you really need to know and about this movie directed by Pascal Laugier is that it is another entry into the new French extremism gore genre, which pretty much means that it pushes the limits of on-screen violence and will pretty much make you squirm in your seat.

3. Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975)

Immensely traumatising, Salò, or the 12o Days of Sodom, a raw tale of sadistic immorality and sexual perversion, the movie makes for one the most controversial and scandalous films ever made. A honest adaption of Marquis De Sade’s classic novel of the same name, but relocated to Fascist-ruled Italy, the movie is an unflinching, violent portrayal of sexual cruelty which can be a little to hard and disturbing to watch.

Then again, insightful artworks are often disturbing, no?

4. Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

An anthropologist heads a rescue party into the South American jungle to search for a missing film team that was making a documentary on cannibal tribes but can only return with their footage – a footage that reveals their crueler intentions. Director Ruggero Deodato served up a plate of offensiveness and unpleasantness with this disturbing film that features some unbelievable realistic sequences which got this movie listed as a snuff film.

5. I Spit On Your Grave (1978)

Unlike the despicable 2010 remark, the original 1978 movie, I Spit On Your Grave is about a woman who is out for revenge. These three words: “Rape”, “Murder”, and “Revenge” is, in short, the summary for this film. I Spit On Your Grave, makes this list because the rape scene was excruciating and pure vile which made the revenge scenes all the more satisfying.

6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Now, if you’ve watched sequels and remakes of this movie but not the original, then you really have no idea what you’re missing out on. Honestly speaking, Leatherface has to be the creepiest slasher villains of all time, like, Jason Voorhees ain’t got nothing on Leatherface. Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original cannibalistic clan at the centre of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre viciously butcher their victims and it’s exultantly bloody and meticulously bizarre.

7. Dead Ringers (1988)

Starring Jeremy Irons, Dead Ringers is about a pair of twin gynaecologists who take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart. Of course, all is well until their relationship begin to go bad over a woman. The brothers lose their sh*t completely as things take a spin for the worse.

8. The Human Centipede (2009)

This movie brings back nightmares. Ugh. So sick and twisted, The Human Centipede is about a mad scientist who kidnaps and mutilates a trio of tourists in order to reassemble into a human centipede, created by stitching their mouths to each others’ rectums. Really more disgusting than it is gory, we urge to you to think twice before watching the second sequence, The Human Centipede 2.

Seriously, you wouldn’t want to make the mistake our writer, Bryna, did.

9. Trouble Every Day (2001)

Trouble Every Day – French erotic cannibal horror. That’s pretty much all you need to know about the movie before you decide to watch it. Also, the incredibly intense and spectacularly realistic performance by Béatrice Dalle and Vincent Gallo will make you not want to eat for a while.

10. Saw IV (2007)

Serial killer Jigsaw once again forces his carefully chosen victims to injure and mutilate themselves in order to survive. Though, the Saw films became increasingly complicated and lost a little of its relevance in the process, Saw IV is perhaps the best. Definitely, our favourite. Especially the last scene with the ice block trap.

We so did not see that coming.

11. The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

Okay, now we don’t think there’s ever been a better remake of a horror and gore movie as good as this one. Directed by Alexandre Aja, this 2006 remake of Wes Cravern’s classic sticks to the original material pretty closely – a family on a road trip gets lost in the desert and are attacked by bloodthirsty cannibalistic creatures. Proving that gore can be art, Aja’s sequences are simply beautiful.

Given that you can stomach them, of course.

12. Inside (2007)

Directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, Inside is about a pregnant woman named Sarah who is tormented by a merciless assailant who wants to cut out her unborn child. Brutal from start to finish, the movie depicts a violent game of cat-and-mouse between two women.

Now if you’re planning to watch any of these movies, we suggest you don’t do it alone. The above list really isn’t for the faint hearted. Enjoy! 😉
