Let’s face it: nothing gets the heart pumping better than a good old scare. Sure, there have been some great horror movies recently, but most have dealt with psychotic murderers, eldritch horrors, ghosts, abstract concepts, aliens, and AI. Where are the good ol’ fashioned monster movies?
Well, if you miss iconic creatures like the Werewolf or Dracula sending shivers down your spine in a cosy theatre hall, then you’re gonna love our horror movie tea! From a surprise teaser drop to a full-on reboot, here are the coming horror flicks you don’t want to miss out on.
New “Wolf Man” Teaser Drops

Though it only enjoyed a few weeks in cinemas, “Nosferatu” has easily surpassed any other horror flick just before 2024 came to a close, reaching a US$100 million global milestone and becoming Robert Eggers’ highest grossing movie so far. It’s a sign that cinemagoers are once again falling head over heels for vintage monsters – and another such creature we’ll be seeing soon is the iconic Wolf Man.
With the release date of the film just around the corner, Universal Pictures decided to tease already-excited fans with a behind-the-scenes look, focusing on the process of how they will bring the iconic monster to life in writer-director Leigh Whannell’s adaptation.
We all know that, back in the day, CGI wasn’t a thing, and moviemakers opted for more practical alternatives, focusing heavily on make-up and design. Though Whannell’s crew has access to more advanced technology to help the creation process, the storied director is still gunning for a more practical approach to the film.
He wanted to create a far more authentic monster feel, something that is better communicated with practical effects, and who can blame him? He sighted other iconic horror flicks such as “The Thing” and “The Fly,” both famous horror films known for their disgustingly amazing use of practical effects to create realistic transformation and body horror.

Each prosthetic on display in the teaser offers a view of varying stages of the protagonist’s transformation. Arjen Tuiten, the special make-up effects designer for the film, stated that he wanted to emphasise that the human body is not compatible with that of an animal, thus creating a transformation process that is far more painful and visceral compared to the previous iteration of the hairy monster. From manually stitched hair to bubbling infected wounds and the oh-so iconic bite mark – all has been created with horrifying detail to better suit the far darker and wilder beast that the film wants to portray.
We do see snippets of the monster both in this teaser trailer and official trailer, though both either have the titular “Wolf Man” shrouded in shadow or in those fleeting “blink or you’ll miss it” frames. From the few images we have seen, it seems as though this transformation is much closer to the original interpretation of the classic werewolf, opting to paint and add small prosthetics directly on the body rather than bulky body suits, which is a breath of fresh air. If you’re simply itching to watch this film, sit tight, as it will hit threats across Malaysia on 16th January.
NBC’s “Grimm” Set To Reboot With A Film

Before the reboots for “Nosferatu” and “Wolf Man” were even announced, “Grimm” was one of the few things that old-timey movie monster fans had to satiate their monster-based horror itch. For those who are unaware of the show, it was an American fantasy police drama that followed Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt, who descended from a line of guardians called Grimms, who was taken to keep the balance between humans and Wesen, the mythological creatures that blend in with human society.
It was a very interesting show that ran from 2011 to 2017 and had 6 seasons with a total of 123 episodes. Though it received mixed reviews during its first season, as the show progressed, it became more and more enjoyable and intriguing to watch, as there was nothing else like it, as it had some bright moments throughout its lifecycle. This resulted in a somewhat memorable series that is wildly loved by niche audiences and even has some cult followings.

If you’d never heard of it before or are a closeted “Grimm” enjoyer, now is the perfect time to (re) binge on the series as a feature-length reboot film, which is now in the works. According to Variety, streaming platform Peacock is looking to create a film based on the 2010s series. If you’ve kept track of the series, you’d know that NBC had played with the idea of resurrecting the IP before, but never came around to actually doing it.
Of course, being in the early stages of development, we do not know if the movie will feature the original cast or an entirely new one, nor do we have any inkling about the plot. What we do know is that two of the three original creators/showrunners are coming back as executive producers, with Josh Berman (known for his work in 2000’s “CSI,” 2006’s “Vanished,” and 2009’s “Drop Dead Diva”) set to pen the script. This is definitely a great treat for fans of the original series, as we might see a return to form not only with the reboot film but also its (most-likely-to-happen) small screen resurrection.
