“Might As Well Don’t Give”: Malaysian Slams Those Who Give Only RM2 Ang Pau During CNY

There are many things to celebrate during Chinese New Year – but one tradition that many anticipate is the giving of ang pau or red envelopes. However, since the minimum amount given in ang pau isn’t determined, it can cause some to be unhappy with what they get.

A Malaysian recently shared their disappointment through the ‘XUAN Play’ Facebook page, complaining about individuals who give out RM2 ang paus. In the post, the netizen wrote, “Those who give RM2 ang pau, can you respect those getting these ang paus? Even my mother gives RM5 to the trash collector and the Grab driver. Why am I only getting RM2? Am I less worthy of RM5 than those people?”.

The Malaysian also laments that the meagre amount isn’t enough to pay for parking, adding that only putting that amount is a waste of the ang pau packet. Interestingly, the anonymous sender defends the post, saying they know others will criticise them for their opinion but adds that many would share the same opinion.

Nevertheless, the post landed the netizen in hot water, with many calling them ungrateful and undeserving of even the RM2 ang pau. One netizen responded, “Ang pau are given as blessings, not for you to earn money. You can be happy to receive more but you shouldn’t be unhappy to receive less. But if you complain like this, I can say you don’t deserve the RM5 ang paus.”

Others said that not everyone can afford to give more due to their financial situation. Some said the Malaysian should be thankful that they got an ang pau regardless of the amount because it’s a sign of blessing. However, some joked that they could also choose not to accept the ang pau if they were unhappy with how little they would receive.

Thankfully, this person didn’t get aggressive for receiving a small amount – but what do you think about the Malaysian’s complaint? Do you agree that people should give more? Or do you side with the others criticising them for being ungrateful?
