Motorists, you may want to avoid parking illegally especially when you are in Petaling Jaya.

In an effort to curb illegal parking and improve traffic flow, the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MBPJ) has introduced a new technology that utilises real-time cameras and is equipped with loudspeakers. These improved CCTVs (closed-circuit television) are situated at various locations around Petaling Jaya.

These CCTVs monitor drivers in real-time via surveillance. Whenever a vehicle commits an offence, an officer monitoring the situation will issue a warning to the driver through the loudspeaker system. Should the driver refuse to listen, he or she could be slapped with a summon or have their vehicles clamped or towed. This system operates 24/7.

For those who want to know, the CCTVs installed at the 12 strategic spots in Petaling Jaya are:

  1. Near Affin Bank in Jalan Yong Shook Lin
  2. Amcorp Mall in Jalan Timur
  3. The Art Gallery in Jalan Utara
  4. St. Paul Church in Jalan Utara
  5. Hotel Armada in Jalan Utara
  6. PJ Hilton in Jalan Barat
  7. LRT Asia Jaya in Jalan Utara
  8. Taman Jaya in Jalan Timur
  9. Bulatan Sultan in Jalan Sultan
  10. SK Sri Petaling in Jalan Utara
  11. SMK Bukit Bintang in Jalan Utara
  12. Wisma Yan in Jalan Selangor

“The council took the initiative of installing 12 CCTV cameras with speakers to handle obstruction especially those caused by double parking. Until February, a total of 1,295 drivers obstructing the road removed their vehicles after hearing instructions from MBPJ officers via the speaker,” said Petaling Jaya Mayor Datuk Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain.

He also added that 120 cameras are linked to the police for security and road safety purposes.
