It’s a sad day for movie fans in Malaysia. MBO Cinemas recently announced that the company is permanently ceasing operations from today (Wednesday, 11th March 2026) onwards, closing all of its remaining branches in the country.

The cinema chain shared the announcement on its social media earlier today, writing, “After many incredible years, MBO Cinemas will now be ceasing operations permanently. The show is over.” In its statement, the company also thanked its customers for their patronage throughout the years, saying, “From all of us at MBO Cinemas, thank you for filling our seats, and our hearts.”

The announcement follows a customer finding a notice of closure at one of the outlets. The cinema chain opened its doors in 2003 and once operated more than 20 outlets. However, the company went into liquidation in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. MBO Cinemas relaunched in 2021 under new management after Golden Screen Cinemas acquired its assets.

After its revival, MBO Cinemas operated eight outlets across Selangor, Melaka, Perak, and Johor, including a standalone cinema in Teluk Intan. Movie fans have reacted to the news, understandably devastated by the closure. Many took to social media to express gratitude towards MBO Cinemas for all the movies and memories.

As with its closure, MBO Cinemas has offered refunds for tickets purchased for dates after 11th March 2026. Customers can email the company at customercare@mbocinemas.com for refund matters.
