Netizens can have polarising reactions to celebrities’ stage outfits. Unfortunately, some netizens recently mocked Taiwanese singer A-Mei (阿妹) for wearing a large fur coat on stage, with many bluntly saying it made her look fat.
The Mandopop diva recently performed at her concert in Hangzhou, China. As the night progressed, the temperature started dropping, and A-Mei felt cold. She then wore an oversized fur coat over her poofy dress to warm herself up. The result was the singer looking rather bulky. Unfortunately for the star, netizens can be rather ruthless with their comments, so A-Mei got mocked for how she looked during the night.
Many bluntly called her fat, saying the coat and dress combo made her look bloated. Some also said she looked like the stone lady character from “Nezha 2 (哪吒2)”, Shiji Niang Niang (石矶娘娘). Those comments received so much traction that the search term “A-Mei looked as fat as Shiji Niang Niang” even trended on Weibo. However, A-Mei’s weight during the night also sparked discussion about weight management among celebrities.
Some netizens criticised A-Mei for not managing her weight, while others said she should lose weight to attract more fans. Understandably, these comments triggered a wave of support for the star. Many fans defended A-Mei, saying she doesn’t need to be skinny to sing well. Others argued that she shouldn’t have to lose weight to please people who only like her for her looks and not her talent.
Despite the discussion about her weight and looks, A-Mei continues to dominate the stage with her powerful vocals. So much so that rumours are circulating about the 52-year-old joining the popular singing competition, “Singer 2025 (歌手2024)”. Some fans also noticed that MangoTV and the show’s producers sent a flower wreath to A-Mei’s Hangzhou concert to wish her a successful show, further fueling the allegations.
