Malaysia has always been known as a multicultural country. Most if not all have grown up surrounded by people from different races, cultures, and religions. It’s truly one of the most beautiful things about our country.

However, some people don’t seem to agree and this man recently made a very bold statement, saying that there is nothing in Malaysia for tourists to experience and explore when they visit our country. Here’s what he meant:

Twitter user @ahnafwijaya_76 or Adi Wijaya recently tweeted something very controversial. In a tweet posted over the weekend, the man claimed that Malaysia has no culture for tourists to explore. “It’s all just cities and shopping malls. Unlike Indonesia and Thailand, the second you step foot there, you can already see their culture,” he tweeted.

The photographer added that Malaysian culture is mostly leaning toward food. In the thread, he also claimed that the people lack appreciation for the country’s cultural tourism. The Selangor-based man’s first tweet went viral, now reaching over 1.1 million views, 1.6k retweets, and 435 quotes at the time of writing. The post received mixed reactions from netizens.

Many disagreed with the statement saying there are so many things in the country for both locals and tourists to experience. Others agreed that Malaysia lacks cultural presentation and appreciation in comparison to its neighbouring countries.

Adi Wijaya responded to netizens’ reactions by clarifying that he has been to many places in Malaysia and even talked to the locals. As proof, he provided photos he took during his journey that showcases some of the cultures around Malaysia. The street photographer said that the point of his thread was to raise awareness on appreciation for one’s own culture.

“You don’t really need to go that far. Just pay close attention to your surroundings, see how locals live, and talk to different people, and then you’ll finally be able to appreciate the culture. As for traditional culture, we’ll have to leave that to the government to fund for preservation and promotion,” he ended his thread.
